KHALIPHA SCHOOLS PROGRAMME

Rational and policy framework
» Students who study art are 4 times more likely to be recognized
for academic achievement and 3 times more likely to be awarded
for school attendance. Arts and music education programs are
mandatory in countries that rank consistently among the highest
for math and science test scores. The President’s Committee
on the Arts and Humanities. Accessed February 28, 2014.
» The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement Foundation
Phase Life Skills curriculum (DBE, 2011) is composed of four
 focus areas: Beginning Knowledge; Personal and Social Well-being;
Creative Arts; and Physical Education. These areas draw on a number
of disciplines and this makes the curriculum dense. This density is,
in turn, a challenge for teachers and teacher education.
Journal of Education, 2018, Dixon, Janks et al.: A critical analysis
of CAPS for Life Skills .
» Data shows teachers’ lack of specialised knowledge across disciplinary
makes it difficult to adequately prepare and teach Life Skills
 (Mosia - 2011 , Krishna – 2013)
» Southern African Music Rights Organization (SAMRO)
» Southern African Music Performance Rights Association (SAMPRA)
» City of Ekurhuleni: Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (SRAC)
» South African Roadies Association (SARA)
» MOSIMA LEGAL RISK COMLIANCE
» The Master Key Institute
» Education Industry Exchange (EIE)
» Composers Authors and Publishers Association (CAPASSO)
» Visual Arts Network of South Africa (VANSA)
» The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA)
» Business and Arts South Africa (BASA)
HOW DOES KHALIPHA ARTS PROGRAMME BRIDGE THIS GAP?
» We supplement and support the Life Skills programme’s
 Creative Arts segment
» We channel and link artistically inclined students with
 network stakeholder entities.
» We enroll a cohort of suitable students in our Khalipha
innovation centre to receive basic qualifications and certification
for the activities engaged at the centre. Certification for skills such as
CAD and basic computer programming. Operator certificates for
technologies such as CNC machines, laser cutters 3D printers will
also be available. These will provide increased employment
 opportunities for these learners.
